Charles S. Thomason

April 10, 1934 — December 31, 2019

            Dr. Charles S. Thomason, 85, of Bluefield, VA went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 31, 2019, at the Charleston Area Medical Center.

            Born in Sandlick, WV, he was the son of the late Robert Thomason and Ada Hall Thomason. He was also preceded in death by sisters: Janie Shutt, Trula Mumford, Elizabeth Farley, and Helen Blackburn. Brothers: Fred Thomason, John Thomason, Bill Thomason, and Robert Thomason (Yvonne).

            He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Thomason, daughters JoAnn Walthall (Glenn) and Sherri Curto (Tony). Grandchildren: Seth Sprinkle, Kelly Sprinkle (John), Natalya Curto, Emil Curto, Colin Walthall (Emily), Great-Granddaughter Tessa Rose and a very special nephew Roger Shutt (Shirley).

            He graduated from Montcalm High School, Concord University, Marshall University, and received his doctorate in education from Virginia Tech University. He is a Shriner, Member of Harman 222 Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, past President of the Tazewell Rotary Club, member of the Bluefield Virginia Rotary Club, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bluefield, Virginia and the Woolwine Fellowship Sunday School class.

            During his life he won many honors, belonged to a large number of organizations, and held many offices in these organizations.

            He served in the United States Army and served his community as a teacher, principal, and Assistant Superintendent in the Tazewell County Public School System.

            He loved his family and found much pleasure in being with his grandchildren and great granddaughter.

            Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM Saturday, January 4, 2020, at the First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Virginia with Rev. Dr. Don Scott and Rev. Dr. Jay Ferguson officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the funeral from 11:00AM—1:00PM.  Masonic rites will be conducted prior to services, at 12:45 PM. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV in the Masonic Gardens where military honors will be performed by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard.

            In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church, 200 South College Avenue, Bluefield, VA 24605.

            Pallbearers will be Roscoe Matney, Ervin Rich, John Payne, Pip Alba, John White, Jim Houchins, Randall Hash and Fred Woody.
