William Dalton “WD” Gillenwater, 88, of Bluefield passed from his earthly home on July 8, 2024, after a short illness. He was born in McComas, West Virginia on February 7, 1936, to Thomas Edward Gillenwater and Sylvia Ours Lusk Gillenwater.
WD was strong, hardworking, kind and gentle soul. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His passion was anything WVU Mountaineer Sporting. He remained active working with various projects at his home. WD made his way through life for his family with strong skill sets in machinery, tradesmanship and finally retiring from the United States Postal Service. His beaming achievement was serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict and honorable discharge atomic veteran of which he loved to tell stories of this time served.
In addition to his parent, he was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Helen “Nancy” Gillenwater; son William “Gill” Gillenwater; brother - Kenneth Gillenwater and sisters – Norma Cook, Macil Quillian and Dorothy Surface.
Left to honor his memory are his daughters, Brenda Browning and husband Steve and Tina Goff and her companion Derrick “JJ” Robinson; daughter in law Becky Gillenwater; Grandchildren – Jill Ann Fitzwater (Derek), McKay Gillenwater, Hunter Browning (Bethany), Mallori Goff (Brandon), Alex Browning, and Kelsi Ratcliff (Tanner). Great grandchildren include Emma Fitzwater and Sadie Mae Ratcliff.
The family would like to acknowledge his loving niece Leeta Quillian Collins for her kindness in aiding in the caregiving.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Rev. Terry Choate officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with military honors by the Iaeger VFW Post.
Friends may call prior to services, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are requested in lieu of flowers to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital (link below).
