Walter F. Poynter, born August 21st, 1935 a beloved father, grandfather, and proud Korean War veteran, passed away peacefully on October 4th, 2024, at the age of 89. A lifelong resident of Bluewell, West Virginia, Walter lived a humble and happy life filled with love, family, and simple joys. Walter was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Poynter, and his dear son, Terry Poynter. Despite the losses he endured, he remained a pillar of strength for his family and those who knew him. He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Poynter and Cyndi Hall (husband Steve Hall), his son, Timothy Poynter (wife Julie Poynter), his stepson Tommy Robinson (wife Martha) and his grandchildren Seth Hall, Shae Martin, Jordan Hall, Cody Poynter, Travis Poynter, Trevor Poynter, Tyler Poynter, Terri Lynn Hess, Doug Robinson, Tonya Robinson, and extended family. Walter was known for his love of the outdoors, enjoying countless days fishing, hunting, and caring for his garden. His life as a truck driver provided him with a great sense of pride and support for his family. His stories from the road will live on in the hearts of his family. Walter’s memory will forever be cherished by those who were lucky enough to know him. He touched many lives with his quiet strength, kindness, hard work ethic, and enduring love for his family. His legacy will continue through the values and lessons he imparted on his children and grandchildren. Walter’s celebration of life will be held at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, WV. The family would like to extend a special thank you to family friend Carol Graham, Amedisys Hospice, Hospice of Southern WV and Beckley Healthcare.
Crypt side service will be conducted 2:00 PM Monday, October 7, 2024 at the Woodlawn Mausoleum with Chaplain C. J. Lilly officiating. The Mercer County Veteran's Honor Guard will conduct Military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home.
