Ulysses D. Cundiff, 77, of Bluefield, VA passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at his home with family by his side. Born May 19, 1941 in Yards, VA, he was the son of the late Samuel and Drucilla Cundiff. He grew up in the rural community of Nemours, WV. He graduated from Bluefield High School and Bluefield State College. He was of the Christian faith. He proudly served in the West Virginia National Guard and was activated to the U.S. Army during the Berlin crisis 1961-62. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Martha, for 55 years. They made Bluefield, VA their home for fifty years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, James and older brother William “Bill” Cundiff.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Martha Cundiff of the home; sons Mark (Beth), Dallas, GA, Joseph, Roanoke, VA, and daughter, Laura (Geoff) Bryce, Arlington, VA. Grandsons Elijah Cundiff, Ethan Cundiff, Turner Bryce, and granddaughters, Jordyn Cundiff, Jayde Cundiff, and Emerson Bryce. Nephews Eugene (Sandy) Cundiff, Matthew (Karen) Cundiff, niece Teresa (Steve) Jeffery and their mother Patsy Cundiff, and many cousins.
Ulysses spent his working career in sales and business management. He was terminal manager of Smith Transfer Corporation Bluefield terminal for twenty years. He served as Director of the United Way of the Virginias from 1999 until he retired in 2006. Ulysses always believed in giving back to the community and gave many hours serving on the Tazewell County Public Service Authority, Bluefield Chamber of Commerce VA Legislative Committee, and Tazewell County Habitat for Humanity. He was the past President of the Bluefield Virginia Business and Professional Association, the Tazewell County Fair Association, and the Sales Executive Club.
Ulysses really enjoyed being outdoors on the farm in Nemours with his dogs, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Rev. Hugh Cole will conduct a memorial service for Ulysses at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, Saturday, July 28, at 11:00 AM, followed by military services and entombment at Grandview Mausoleum, Bluefield, VA. Honored to be pallbearers will be Wayne Blevins, Geoff Bryce, Matthew Cundiff, Donnie Gott, Randy Phillips, Connel Ware, and Honorary Pallbearer, Dennis Wimmer.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, July 27, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
