BLUEFIELD—Roy G. Miller, 97, of Hampton, VA, former resident of Bluefield, WV passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Northampton Convalescent & Rehab Center, Hampton, VA, where he had resided since June 2017.
Born March 5, 1921 in Anawalt, WV, he was the son of the late Leonard G. Miller and Georgia Frye Miller of Chihowie, VA. He was married to his cherished wife, the late June Hash Miller, for 70 years prior to her passing in December 2016. He was a long standing member of Cumberland Heights Baptist Church in Bluefield, WV from 1956 where he served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and interim Music Director. He graduated from Gary High School in McDowell County in 1940. Soon after graduating, he joined the Army National Guard’s 150th Service Company in Welch, WV. Immediately after the U.S entered WWII he was sent to the Panama Canal Zone to protect the stategic transportation route during the first half of his nearly 5 years in the Army. The second half of his enlistment he was reassigned to the 71st Infantry Division’s anti-tank squad where he served in Europe during some of the most difficult periods of the war. Upon his return, he soon met and married the love of his life, June Miller, and then worked for Texaco as a truck driver and later Plant Manager in Bluefield until his retirement. After retiring, he enjoyed working part-time for Tinder-White Trucking Company and transferring cars for Andy Clark Ford. Additionally, he loved spending time with his friends walking at the Mercer Mall.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Connie Bivens and her husband Larry of Shepherdstown, WV and devoted son, Keith Miller and his wife Teddie of Hampton, VA. He has six grandchildren (Sean, Lisa, Sherry, Krista, Christie, & Diana) and nine great grandchildren (Lee, Hannah F., Sean Jr, Archer, Ella, Jacob, Hannah C., Savannah, & Dylan).
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM, Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluefield, WV, with Pastor Jim Kestner officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard. A private burial with family will follow in Chilhowie, VA, at Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery.
The Miller family will be receiving friends and relatives on Monday, November 12, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
