Rondie Earl Hicks, 80 yrs. old of Shumate Farm Lane, Bluefield, WV, died Sunday, October 17, 2021 peacefully at his residence surrounded by his family. Born in Dante, Virginia (Russell County) on July 23, 1941, he was the son of the late Adam Bloom and Martha Nellie (Holbrook) Hicks. He was preceded in death by his brothers Vernie and Allen Hicks, sisters Sylvia Johns, Iva Lee Hartley, Ruth McCoy, two infant siblings, and his special niece Scarlett McCoy. Rondie attended Castlewood High School and enlisted in the service at the age of 17 yrs old. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He also was a retired coal miner with 28 yrs of service. During his mining career he held positions as a electrician, fire boss and mine foreman. He worked for Eastern Associates, Paul Miller Associates and Jack Bowling Associates. Rondie enjoyed going to the beach with his children and family, attending his grandsons’ football games and being active with the boy scouts. Everyone knew him as “Paw”. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved spending time camping and staying at his “Happy Place” - his hunting camp in Monroe County. He loved his angel dogs Chelsie, Bama, Bo, Frank and Tanner and will be greatly missed by Benji, Cooper and Max. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Louise (Hamer) Hicks, love of his life of 55 yrs. He is also survived by his daughter Stephanie Martha (Hicks) Eades of Princeton, WV, as well as his two grandson’s Zachary Kyle Elder and fiance’ MaKayla Belcher and children Bryleigh & London of Princeton, WV. Adam Rondie Elder of the home, and great-grandson Dawson Kyle Elder (Paw’s Boy) He was the last remaining survivor of his immediate family. He is survived by two special nieces, Diane Maxwell of Castlewood, VA and Linda Jordan and son Scott of St. Paul VA. Special nephew Charles Hicks of Michigan. He will be fondly remembered by his brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws James (Jimmy) and Monica Hamer of Colorado, Richard and Dorothea Hamer of Bluefield, WV, Charlie and Carol Hamer of Bluefield, VA, Russell and Brenda Hamer of Florida, Susie and Carlos McPeak of Camp Creek, WV., and numerous nieces and nephews. Rondie was a member of Burke Baptist Church of Keystone, WV and attended Stinson United Methodist Church on Oakvale Road, Princeton WV. Special thanks to Bluestone Health Center and Compassus Hospice. Memorial services will be conducted at 1:00pm on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021 at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Pastor William (Carl) Van Stavern officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard . In honoring his wishes, he will be cremated following the services. Friends may call prior to services, from 12:00-1:00 at the funeral home.
