Roger Franklin Whitt of Bluefield, W.Va., passed away on Feb. 6, 2020, at his home. He was 94 years old.
Roger was born in Bluefield, W.Va., and was the son of the late William Stone Whitt and Blanch Augusta Steele Whitt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Steele Whitt, and sister-in-law, Judith Altizer Whitt.
He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He worked as a civil engineer at Norfolk Southern Railway and retired after 38 years of service. He was a member of Brushfork Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. In his retirement, he loved photography, especially “train chasing,” as well as reading and music.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Zela Roberts Whitt; his son, William “Bill” Whitt, and Bill’s wife, Jessica Whitt, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; his niece, Barbara Carlson, and Barbara’s husband, Brian Carlson, of Dallas, Texas; and his sister-in-law, Vera Roberts of Bluefield, W.Va.
A funeral service will be held on Tues., Feb. 11, 2020, at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Wes Lambert officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va., where family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The Whitt family will receive friends and relatives on Tues., Feb. 11, 2020, from noon until the time of Mr. Whitt’s service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Brushfork Baptist Church, 2510 Old Bramwell Road, Bluefield, W.Va. 24701.
