Roger Leroy Shutt

Roger Leroy Shutt, 86, of Bluefield (Sandlick), WV, passed away on August 28, 2021, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Roger was born on January 17, 1935, to Harry and Janie Thomason Shutt in Sandlick, WV. After graduating from Bramwell High School in 1952, he went on to enlist in the United States Army in 1955. After an honorable discharge, he met and married Shirley Bishop in 1957. He went on to get his Bachelor of Science in Education from Concord College in 1960. While teaching at Bluefield High School, Roger and Shirley had the first of their three children, Peggy, Brian and Patti. He was subsequently employed as a math professor at Bluefield College, VA, and went on to acquire his Master of Science degree from Radford College in 1970. His days were busy, teaching, farming and raising a family. He loved spending his free time camping, fishing, and woodworking. Upon retirement he and Shirley spent the next 20 winters in Okeechobee, FL, doing what he liked best, fishing. In addition to his parents, Roger was predeceased by a very special uncle, who was more like a brother, Charles Thomason. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, daughters Peggy Flomerfelt, Patti Watkins and husband Terry of Sandlick, son Brian Shutt and wife Thuy of Delray Beach, FL, grandchildren Zach Flomerfelt, Tyler White, Kimberly Vaughan, Drake Shutt, Mason Shutt, and great grandchildren River Vaughan, Saraswati Vaughan. In accordance with his wishes, graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., September 3rd at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in the Garden of Gethsemane. Those wishing to attend please arrive at 10:45 a.m. Pastor Melody Rickman will be officiating along with the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard performing military graveside rites.
