Robert Douglas Coon

August 29, 1941 — March 30, 2019

Robert Douglas Coon of 207 West Mountain View Avenue, Bluefield, Virginia departed his earthly life on March 30, 2019 at Loving Hands Adult Care in Bluefield, West Virginia. He lost a long sad battle with alzheimer's disease.

He was one of five children and the fourth son of the late Evelyn Ayers Coon and Thomas Poud Coon and was born on August 29, 1941.

Doug was educated in Bluefield area schools. He was a graduate of Graham High School, attended Bluefield College, and received his electrical engineering degree from Bluefield State College. He was a clever and skillful individual whose interests and talents were varied. He was an  accomplished mechanic, electrician, and talented craftsman. His passions included electronics, gardening, and music. He put these passions into action through his on-going elecronic projects, his well tended yearly, vegetable garden, and his participation in music groups. He was once a member of the Chancel Choir at the First United Methodist Church, and was a participant with the Bluestone Choral.

His career spanned more than fifty years and included tenures at Dixie Appliance Company, Norfolk and Western Railway, Poly Scientific, and Pyott Boone Electronics from which he retired in 2011. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1961 to 1967.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Allen Coon and Edgar Eugene Coon.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doraldean Jones Coon, and his only daughter, DeAnna Leigh Coon Villalobos (Edgar), two adored grandsons, Beckett and Bryceton Villalobos, one brother, Billy Joe Coon of Bluefield, Virginia, one sister, Darlene Clark of Lincolnton, North Carolina and several nieces and nephews.

The family is truly grateful for the care that Hospice Compassus and Melissa Lucado's care givers at Loving Hands provided during the final weeks of Doug's life.

A celebration of life will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Virginia on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. with the Reverend Doctor Don Scott and the Reverend Doctor Jay Ferguson officiating. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 12:30 until the hour of the service.

Burial will be at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia. Those serving as pallbearers include Kenny Boyd, Shane Clamme, Carl Janutolo, Richard Jones, Roscoe Matney, and Raymond Mulkey.

The family requests that gifts of remembrance be presented to the First United Methodist Church at 200 South College, Bluefield, Virginia for its Higher Education Fund if anyone so desires.
