Mona Elizabeth Moreton Owrey, 95, of 178 Dixie Drive, Bluefield, WV, formerly of Elkhorn, WV, died Sunday, March 17, 2019 in Palm Bay, Florida.
Born June 5, 1923 at Queen Charlotte Hospital, London, England, she was the daughter of the late James Francis Moreton and Agnes Neal Moreton. As a young teenager, she survived the German bombing of London in the early years of World War II.
During that tumultuous time, Mona met a young American G.I., Charles "Porky" Owrey. They married in England, and once the war was over, the young war bride and her baby daughter, Claire, joined Charles in Clarksburg, WV. They later moved to Elkhorn, WV, where they raised their four children.
After retirement, Mona and Charles enjoyed spending the winter months and many happy hours fishing, in the Melbourne/Palm Bay area of Florida. Just days before her passing, Mona was able to visit her old fishing "haunts" and trips "ocean side" to feel sea breezes and smell the salt air.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Owrey, daughters, Claire Owrey Mathena, and Mona Owrey Taylor; brothers, James Moreton, Eddie Moreton, and sister, May Moreton Taylor; son-in-law, Michael Alley.
Survivors include her son, James E. Owrey (Rosalie), of Bluefield, WV and; daughter, Janet Owrey Alley of Bluefield, son-in-law, Roy Mathena; nine grandchildren, all of whom she had a loving hand in raising, Lee Mathena, Melissa Mathena, Brian Mathena, Andrew Mathena, all of Ohio, Jennifer Alley Hurt, Virginia, Meghan Alley, Bluefield, Elizabeth Alley, Maryland, James C. Owrey of Charleston, WV, and Sara Owrey Monteleone of Leesburg, VA. She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and special caregiver and friend of 25 years, Virginia Bell.
