Michael E. Shumate, 61, of Ruffner Street, Bluefield, WV, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 11, 2021 at a Bluefield hospital. He is now with the Lord and reunited with his beautiful bride and mother of his children.
Born on September 1, 1959 in Jacksonville, FL, he was a son of the late Estel and Margaret Smith Shumate. He was a 1977 graduate of Northfork High School and was a veteran of the US Navy. He retired from Concord University after 30 years of service as a carpenter. Michael enjoyed sports, hunting and the outdoors. He was a coach and mentor to many young people. He was also an avid Redskin and Mountaineer fan. His children and especially his grandchildren are his legacy. He will be missed dearly and loved forever.
In addition to his parents, Estel and Margaret Smith Shumate, he was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Madonna Elaine Shumate; a sister, Sandra Shumate Lares, and Deborah Joan Shumate.
Survivors include his children, Rebecca Lynn Blankenship (Harry T. Hanley), Deborah Ann Crandall, Margaret Sue Shumate; son, SGT Estel Michael (Destinee) Shumate, US ARMY, special niece and nephew, Candace and Eric Lawless; grandchildren, Cassidee and Duece Blankenship, Zeke Hanley, Jackson Crandall, Michaelyn Shumate, Teighaun, Tinzleigh, Easton Taityn Shumate; bonus grandkids, Nyasia, ZZ, Nautica, and Jayce Hanley; brother, Richard Shumate; sisters, Barbara Polatz and Patsy Smith; in-laws, Chris (Wendy) Lawless and Sean (Patsy) Lawless; many nieces and nephews, special cousins and aunts. Also, the family wishes to thank her extended family at Fresenius Dialysis Center.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at 1:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Rev. Stanley Metz officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where Estel Shumate, Chris Lawless, Sean Lawless, Harry T. Hanley, Brian Shumate, Anthony Shumate, Jesse Jennings, Zach Haynes, and Charlie Lynch will serve as pallbearers Honorary pallbearers will be Brad Polin, Ted Jones and Richard Shumate. Military honors will be performed by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard.
Friends may call on Thursday from 12:00 – 1:00 PM prior to the service.
