Marvin C. Woodie, 92, of Bluefield, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday November 16, 2021. He was born March 18, 1929 in Welch, WV the son of the late David Ronder Woodie and his wife Myra Captola Bentley Woodie. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Jo Woodie last year whom he was looking forward to rejoining in heaven. He was also preceded in death by his younger sister, Emma Jean Campbell. He loved reliving his memories of growing up in Hemphill bottom in McDowell County.
After graduation from Welch High School he enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at 8th Army headquarters in South Korea. Upon his discharge he returned to McDowell County and started his own businesses. When he returned he also proposed to the love of his life, Betty Jo Woodie, who preceded him in death last year. They made a loving home in Welch and raised 3 children there and relocated to Bluefield, VA in 1981.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Myra Jo Woodie Yates and sons, Marvin C. Woodie, Jr. and Stuart P. Woodie & his wife Melissa R. Woodie. There are also 8 grandchildren and their spouses: Gavan Yates (Kelsy), Forrest Yates (Trish), Lauren Woodie, Jessica Woodie, Seth Woodie (Amber), Caroline Woodie, Marshall Woodie, Emma Woodie, and 2 great grandchildren, Silas (Seth & Amber) and Evie Jo (Gavan & Kelsy). He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law William and Phyllis Puckett.
A small memorial service will be held by the family members around Thanksgiving. As were his wishes he was cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Ministry at First United Methodist Church, Bluefield, VA or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
