HOUSTON, Texas – Jane McCormick Harrell 84, of Houston, TX and formerly of Bramwell, WV died on Sunday, May 15, 2022.
A devoted wife, mother and educator, Harrell was born on September 19, 1937, in Bramwell, WV and the only daughter to the late Dwight William and Martha Ellwood McCormick.
She graduated from Bramwell High School and Concord College. She was working in Narrows, VA when she met Herbert L. Harrell, Jr. (H.L.), they would eventually marry in 1965. Like both of her parents, Jane ultimately found her calling in the classroom. A lifelong learner and advocate of education, she shared her gift and her love of mathematics at both the high school and college level. Never truly leaving West Virginia in her heart, she and H.L. moved to Houston in 1968 and welcomed their beloved son, Kevin Anthony Harrell. They created a life well lived surrounded and supported by family and beloved friends they had chosen as family. Jane was a woman of strong faith and sound mind. A constant advocate, she spent countless hours working and volunteering with Special Olympics organizing events and fundraisers, coaching teams, and attending events on a statewide, national, and international level. She loved well and often and was happiest reading a good book, enjoying a meal and shared fellowship across a table, laughing, shopping, traveling and being the biggest cheerleader and supporter to her son.
Jane is proceeded in death by her parents and her husband. In addition to Kevin, those left to cherish her memory include her cousins Robyn Parsons and Laurie Moreland and their extended families, beloved friends Pam & Davy Holak, caregiver and confidant Monique Ogbu and a host of dear friends.
A celebration service of Jane’s life will be conducted on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 11 AM at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell with Mr. Craig Hammond officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Special Olympics to support The Woodland Shooting Stars. Checks must be made payable to SOTX.06.WSS and should be mailed in care of Summit Community Bank, PO Box 1559, Bluefield, WV 24701. Online condolences will be accepted at www.cravens-shires.com.
