James Richard Flinchum, Jr.

June 25, 1927 — February 23, 2019

James R. “Jim” Flinchum, Jr. made his final journey on Saturday morning, February 23, 2019 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, West Virginia.
Jim was born on June 25, 1927 in Welch, West Virginia to the late James R. Flinchum, Sr. and Katherine Sells Flinchum. Jim, was a proud veteran of the United Sates Marines serving in both; WWII and the Korean Conflict. After serving his country Jim returned home where he went to work with N&S Railways, retiring in 2001 at the age of 74. After his retirement he served as a volunteer for the Veterans Administration until the age of 87, always giving back to the Armed forces he served so proudly. Jim was such a humanitarian, bringing home strays he would find on the railroad tracks, getting those animals shots and finding them a forever home. Jim, also donated faithfully to the humane society. Jim was one of the very few left from the “Greatest Generation” He will be missed by many, but left an indelible mark on everyone he met. Johnny and James are blessed and proud to call him Dad. –Semper Fi Pops, We love you.
In addition to his parents, Jim was also preceded in death one daughter Karen Flinchum Phillips.
Left to carry on his memory are his two sons, James R. “Dickie” Flinchum, III of Bluefield, West Virginia and John R. Flinchum of Bluefield, West Virginia. One brother Harold Flinchum and wife Fay of Nashville, Tennessee; one sister Norma Webb of Silver Springs, Maryland; a special cousin Ann Chandaha of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Debbie Jones and husband David of Roanoke, Virginia; Colby Flinchum and partner Derick McElhaney of Richmond, Virginia and Kellen Knight of Lynchburg, Virginia.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 01, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, West Virginia with Minister Tony Reed officiating the service. Military rites will be performed for Jim, by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard.
The Flinchum family will receive family and friends from 6:00 p.m. until the time of his memorial service at the funeral home.
