Bluefield-VA Jack Witten Proffitt, 83, of Bluefield, Virginia passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born on May 8, 1936, Jack was the youngest child of the late Herbert D. and Grace C. Helton Proffitt of Bluefield. He was retired from Leatherwood/Flav-O-Rich Dairy after more than 40 years of service and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of Cumberland Heights Baptist Church.
Jack cherished his many friends in life, met thru his church, his work, his neighborhood, or just the fact he never met a stranger. One of his greatest accomplishments was the honor of being selected as Bluefield’s “Man of the Year” in 1973, due in part to help those less fortunate.
Jack was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters Loise and Rebecca, and brothers Walter, James, and Raymond.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 65 years, Margaret Marie Hart Proffitt of Bluefield, Virginia, and son Steve and wife Nancy of Bristol, Virginia. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and their families Jean Thoss, Betty (Tom) Baldwin, Marcia (Ted) Dixon, and Carole (Curtis) Necessary.
The Proffitt family would like to thank the staff at Westwood Center for their care and compassion during Jack’s illness.
Adhering to Jack’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where friends may gather Sunday November 17, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. with the Reverend Jim Kestner officiating where Jack’s friends will serve as Pallbearers.
