Gwendolyn Martin Lucion

July 16, 1937 — February 11, 2021

Gwendolyn Martin Lucion, 83, passed away on February 11, 2021 in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Gwen spent the largest portion of her life in McDowell County West Virginia. But more recently had a home in Bluewell.  She was the daughter of the late Robert and Bonnie Martin.

Gwen’s primary focus in life was her family—her daughters Tina, Kim, and Lori, and her husband Henry. But she also gave of herself through teaching, before her daughters arrived, and in several other roles for the McDowell County Board of Education. She served as President of the West Virginia and the McDowell County School Service Employees Association, a position that was vital to her, far beyond retirement. She worked in the McDowell County system for more than thirty years and touched the lives of coworkers and students.

Along with Henry, Gwen dedicated time and effort to the Make-A-Wish Foundation after retirement; they acted as volunteer wish-granters within that organization for several years. The satisfaction and joy derived from that activity speaks to Gwen’s lively spirit, generosity, love and compassion.

Gwen was a valued member of her community and belonged to several organizations including the Bluewell Lions Club and the Sons of Italy. She was also a member of the Bluewell Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life Henry Lucion, her parents Robert and Bonnie Martin and her brother James Martin.

Gwen is survived by her daughters, Tina Lucion of Fulton, NY, Kimberly Lucion Miller of Kernersville, NC, Lori Lucion of Greensboro, NC and her brother Bob Martin of Smith Mountain Lake, VA.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Gwen’s name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Inc. 888 Oakwood Road #330, Charleston WV 25314.

Grave side rights and celebration of Gwen’s life will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell, WV on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 3:00 in the afternoon. Dr. Steven Stefancic will preside.
