Elsie Surface, affectionately known as “Tootsie”, 89, of Sandlick, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2017 in Winston-Salem, NC. Born on February 29, 1928 in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Josie Bishop Glass. She had lived in Sandlick for many years and was a member of the Sandlick United Methodist Church. She was a former employee of Wardens Market in Bluewell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Surface; her first husband, Kermit Hopkins; a brother, Luther “Bookey” Glass; and two sisters, Opal Brennan and Nellie Beverly. She was the last surviving member of her family. Survivors include: Stepchildren: Judy Ashcraft of Sistersville, WV Marshall Surface and Kerry of Charlotte, NC Cindy Daugherty and Rick of Bradenton, FL Ben Surface and Sherri of Sandlick 9 step grandchildren: Richard, Jody, Melody, Krista, Jason, Kendra, Dustin, Erin, and Casey 14 nieces and nephews: Barbra, Michael, Randy, Marty, Allen, David, Lu, Lela, Saundra, Pat, Kathy, Lana, Debbie and Teresa -- each of whom considered her their "Other Mother." Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Larry Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call on Monday from 10:00-11:00AM at the funeral home.
