Earlene Christie Wiley Simons, known affectionately as Nanna or Nanny to her beloved grandchildren, passed away on June 17th, 2024 in Princeton, WV. She was born on April 8th, 1926 in Mullens, WV to Paul and Rheda Wiley (née Pennington). Earlene was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Chester and Alvin Wiley.
She is survived by her loving daughter Shirley Vinciguerra (Mike) of Bluefield, WV; grandson Scott Piper (Stacie) of Nashville, TN; granddaughter Tracy Hamer (Charles); great-granddaughter Abby Basham (Hunter); great-grandson Benjamin Hamer, all of Lerona, WV; and her cherished companion Casper.
Earlene was also preceded in death by her devoted husband Elwood R. “Shorty” Simons. She was the straight man to Shorty’s antics. Throughout their lives together, they shared a love that inspired all who knew them. After completing school, Earlene worked for the government in Washington D.C., where she made lasting friendships and contributed to important work for our country. Her dedication to service continued throughout her life as she cared for those around her with unwavering compassion.
In addition to being a dedicated mother and grandmother, Earlene had many passions that brought joy into the lives of those around her. She loved crocheting beautiful creations that will be treasured forever by those lucky enough to receive them. Her talent extended beyond crafting as she was an excellent yodeler whose melodic voice filled the hearts of all who heard it. Earlene found comfort in simple pleasures such as watching "The Young & The Restless" and savoring a warm bowl of beans and cornbread – a true Appalachian woman through and through.
Her decision to donate her body to science is yet another testament to Earlene's selflessness – even after passing from this world, she continues giving back so others may benefit from medical advancements.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude towards the staff at Ridgecare Assisted Living and Amedisys Hospice for their exceptional care during the last weeks of Earlene's life. Their kindness provided immeasurable comfort during difficult times.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Ridgecare Assisted Living at 304-487-1278 in honor of Earlene's memory – ensuring that others continue receiving compassionate care just as she did.
Earlene will be dearly missed but never forgotten – may we carry forward the love she gave us all throughout our own lives.
There will be no funeral arrangements at this time.
