Christine Phillips

December 7, 1930 — May 20, 2020

Christine Phillips, 89, of 186 Winterhaven Ave., Princeton, WV, formerly of Kimball, WV, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born December 7, 1930 to the late Michael and Emma Barna Hallis in Elkhorn, WV where she was raised along with her five brothers and four sisters who all preceded her in death.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She overcame polio as a child and never let her handicap stop her from her many accomplishments.  She was a proud graduate of Elkhorn High School in 1949 and enjoyed attending the many class reunions and reminiscing with her fellow classmates.  She was an active member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church where she led the choir with her angelic voice, first in Elkhorn and continuing her service to God when St. Mary’s Orthodox Church moved to Bluefield.

She also was preceded in death by her mother-in law, Ethel Mabry and daughter-in-law, Kathy Phillips.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband John Phillips of over 67 years; her son, Daniel Phillips of Gary, WV and his children, Marielle Messick (Brian), Scott Jessee (Heather), Haylie McPherson (Austin), and Landon Roberts; her daughter, Deborah Bowlick (Jeffrey) of Bluefield, WV and their children, Jason Bowlick (Kerri), and Amanda Bowlick; her daughter, Martha Colo (Tony) and their children, Joseph Colo and Sarah Colo.

Having been a devout Christian and spiritual leader to her children and grandchildren, she taught them about Christianity and to be compassionate and loving to others.  Special thanks to her healthcare giver, Rena Finley, Dr. Gene Duremdes and the staff of Princeton Community Hospital and Dr. Christopher Parrish.

A funeral service will be held at Woodlawn Mausoleum in Bluewell, WV on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. with Father Michael Foster officiating.  Pallbearers will be family and friends.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, 187 Justin Lane, Bluefield, WV 24701.
