Cecil F. Lockhart of Welch passed away at age 95 suddenly on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 after a short illness.
He was born in Short Pole, WV in 1926 the son of the late William Lockhart and Rosetta Cline Lockhart, the 6th of 7 children.
He is survived by Helen Cline Lockhart, his loving wife of 75 years, a daughter Sharon White (Bill Davis) of Morgantown, WV and Brian Lockhart (Carmen) of Welch, WV. Two sons preceded him in death, Stephen Lockhart and Stanley Lockhart, along with his 6 siblings. He had 3 grandchildren, Cindy Petitte (Joe), Stephanie Lanham (Josh), Candi Bean. He had 6 great grandchildren, Ava, Luca, Audrey, Alexa, Ari and Ozma whom he loved dearly. He has numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly. He was an animal lover and will be missed by his winged buddies Fred, Caesar, Heckle and Jekyll; his canine friends Cephas and Molly; and Casper the cat.
Cecil was a retired coal producer working mines in McDowell County and Greenbrier County. He was the owner of Lockhart Coal Company, Southern Coal Company and C&H Trucking Company. He loved telling stories of his over 50 years in the mining industry, especially to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cecil served in the United States Army in World War II (1944-1945) in the Philippine Islands achieving the rank of Corporal.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home from 10:00am until 11:00am Saturday, May 8, 2021. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00am with the Rev. Carolyn R. Bishop and the Rev. Dan Pruitt officiating. An internment ceremony will take place at the Woodlawn Mausoleum immediately following the funeral service. Pallbearers are Bobby Bowman, Josh Little, Jimmy Hamilton, Jimmy Osbourne, Joe Petitte and Josh Lanham. Military graveside rights will be provided by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard.
