Catherine Gates Quattrone

Catherine Gates Quattrone, 87, of Beckley, WV, formerly of Welch, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born on February 13, 1936, in Big Four, WV to the late John and Helen Polinski Gates.She was preceeded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dante F. Quattrone, her sister, Linda Gates Crouch and her brothers Bobby and Larry Gates. Catherine was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved her family and felt especially blessed in her role as grandmother to five grandchildren. 

Catherine graduated from Welch High School in 1954 and from McLains Business College in Bluefield. She was an agent for Trailways Bus Lines in Welch for several years before becoming a homemaker and helping with the family business, Quattrone’s Grocery, in Hemphill, WV. She was a member of Welch First United Methodist Church where she participated in choir and handbells and enjoyed friendships made there.  

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Yolanda Hoelzer and her husband Keith of Charlottesville, VA; her son Phillip Quattrone and his wife Kristie of Beckley, WV; sisters Deborah Johns and her husband Dan of Princeton, WV, and Dorothy Burgess of Manassas, VA; her cherished grandchildren Samantha Hoelzer, of Washington, DC, Craig Hoelzer and  his wife Hannah of Charlottesville, VA, and Rachel, Dante P. and Jackson Quattrone of Beckley, WV whom she was fortunate to share their home with for the past ten years. She is also survived by several special nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be held from 1-2 pm on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home followed by the funeral service led by the Rev. Olen Winfree Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Phillip, Dante and Jackson Quattrone, Keith and Craig Hoelzer, Dan and Bobby Johns and Caire Powe.
