Carolyn Mae Mitchell, affectionately known as "Nanny," was born on October 8, 1951, in Boissevain, Virginia. Her radiant spirit and warm heart touched the lives of all who knew her. Sadly, she passed away unexpectedly on March 12, 2025, at a hospital in Princeton, West Virginia, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.
Carolyn was a devoted dog groomer, spending many years in the company of a close friend, where she channeled her passion for animals into a meaningful career. This bond stretched beyond mere companionship; it exemplified the profound friendships that brought her joy throughout her life. In her earlier years, she attended Graham, establishing a foundation that would lead her to become the outspoken, kind-hearted matriarch that everyone cherished.
Those who had the privilege to know Carolyn remember her as an extraordinarily ornery and candid individual, who spoke her mind without hesitation. Her genuine nature made it impossible not to love her. Carolyn had a delightful zest for life, often starting her mornings with a cup of coffee shared with her dear friend, Debbie. Those quiet moments were an essential part of her day, filled with warmth and camaraderie.
Her personality shone brightest during heartfelt moments with loved ones. To one special friend, she embodied the role of a nurturing mother, filling a void that had long been felt. The memories shared are nothing short of treasured. A particularly humorous moment stands out—a time when Carolyn advised against making macaroni and cheese before she returned from the grocery store. Ignoring her warning, the noodles were burnt, and her laughter echoed in that kitchen, a memory that evokes smiles even in the bittersweet grief of her loss. Anytime someone in her circle faced heartbreak, Carolyn was their unwavering support, a beacon of comfort and kindness.
Family was the essence of Carolyn's life, and she took immense pride in her accomplishments, especially her children and grandchildren. Her sons, Jerry Lewis and Scottie Mitchell, were her pride, while her grandchildren—Dustin Lewis, Jordan Quillian, and Alyssa Woods—brought her unparalleled joy. The love also extended to her great grandsons, Ethan Perdue and Abel Lewis, who were cherished blessings in her life. Carolyn lived for her family; they filled her heart with purpose and her days with meaningful existence.
She is preceded in death by her beloved sister, Maugilla Sexton, and her devoted sister, Debbie Johnson. Carolyn is also survived by cherished moments shared with her late father, Emmett Farmer, and late mother, Ethel Farmer, as well as her niece, Crystal Johnson. Though they are remembered with heavy hearts, they continue to live on in the stories and love shared by those left behind.
Visitation will be held on March 15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluefield, West Virginia.
In celebrating Carolyn Mae Mitchell's life, we honor a woman whose laughter lit up the lives of everyone she touched. She will forever be remembered as a loving friend, fierce personality, and family matriarch whose legacy lives on in the hearts of those who had the joy of knowing her.
