November 24, 1942, in Anawalt, WV, the world was truly blessed to receive an extraordinary gift in the person of Brucella Jane Cox. Born into a Christian family that would ultimately number nine, four sisters and four brothers, theirs was an existence full of love and privilege. A mischievous little girl that dazzled everyone she encountered, which proved to be a gift that would last a lifetime, Brucella grew and learned quickly and committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of nine, never deviating from His course.
Brucella, like her siblings, learned to drive in a coal-truck through the curvy mountain roads of McDowell County, WV. In fact, a typical Sunday might consist of Church, dinner and a coal-truck race across the property that would often find onlookers perched on railroad tracks watching Brucella beat Helen to the finish line once again. She lived on the James River on Virginia’s coast and while there enjoyed riding a little red Honda motorcycle of her own. She survived a tornado when she lived in Florida, and finally moved to Springville, VA, in 1971. It was there she would call home for her remaining years.
Brucella epitomized devotion to divinity. Her spirituality was her solace, and she taught us Christ’s message of love and forgiveness until she could no longer. The sacrifices she made are plentiful, as are the lives she touched so graciously. Sons that will miss her guidance, Larry Keith Dalton, Jr., “Skip”, and Barry Heith were blessed to have Brucella. She cherished them as dearly as any mother ever has her children. Barry was able to spend Brucella’s final seven years faithfully caring for his mother as Skip endeavored to provide via Grasshoppers Lawn Care and Landscaping. Although Skip is the elder, he’d always be her baby.
Brucella passionately cared for her grandchildren Amber, Ashley and Megan. Those girls pulled many all-nighters with Ma Maw Jane watching Beaches and Shirley Temple movies, eating popcorn, loving and laughing. Greatgrandchildren Gabrielle, Mijalita, Natalea, Kursten and Skyler will sorely miss her judging the Easter egg coloring competition, and grandson Victor joins an abundance of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends left to rejoice in her life. Amber’s husband Majer, Ashley’s husband Mike, and the whole family, as well as her deeply loved and devoted “daughters”, Vanessa and all of her greatness, Michelle with her balloons and ability to “do anything”, and Dottie’s kindness and compassion, would also like to thank her special friends Kathy and Felicia.
Brucella’s brother Melvin is the last of the Cox boys, and he now has wife Janet to drive daringly close to the edge like he often did Brucella, and he will. Laughing. Sisters Helen, Lois, Violet and Mary will continue to serve the family with strength and stability as the remaining Cox girls, each one an absolutely beautiful creation.
A champion for Christ, Brucella enjoyed spending time in prayer, with her family and friends, watching Christian broadcasts, the Waltons, Church, Gospel music, visiting the sick, reading the Bible, and attending revivals. An active member of the Church of God for 67 years, Brucella exemplified her faith in God through words and actions. A Godly woman, she always sought God first, spoke faithfully, showed true beauty, remained humble, and was relentless in prayer and intercession for everyone. Every one!
Brucella owned Dalton Trucking for many years and was the co-founder of Grasshoppers Lawn Care and Landscaping. All the while, she taught Sunday school for decades, sang angelically, played the piano and delivered many sermons both at homes and from the pulpit. Always imparting Christ’s message of love and forgiveness. She had a zeal for travel as well. She walked beaches of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, flew to San Francisco simply to drive back across country, and flew to Israel to walk where Jesus walked. There, she rode a camel through the desert and was baptized in the river Jordan. She cruised the Sea of Galilee, and climbed Calvary.
The world lost Brucella on May 20, 2019 at the age of 76. As a result of her faithful subservience to the King of Kings, she is now rejoicing in paradise with her mommy, Velma America Cox, and her daddy, Don Lee Cox, brothers Clovis, Lakewood and Ardie Cox, twin sons Howard Lee and Edward, and a precious baby boy that she’ll finally get to embrace. Skip’s late wife Rhonda is worshipping with her at the feet of Jesus, the most amazing man to ever live. Finally, the love of her life is before her.
A celebration of life will be conducted on Thursday, May 23, 2019 from 3:30-8:00 at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, WV. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Jim Coe and Reverend Wanda Coe officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, WV. Serving as huckle bearers will be Ermal Blevins, Steve Johnson, Majer Elswick, Mike Hill, Michael Lawless, Keith Dunn, Victor Scott and Jerry Stepp.
We lost a mighty prayer-warrior with Brucella’s passing, but Heaven gained a dynamic demon-slayer. “’Tis but one life will soon be passed, only what’s done for God will last”. Glorious in life and gracious in death was Brucella … more precious than rubies. Life is but a vapor, accept Jesus and we won’t miss her long!
