Bonnie Mae Carter Buckhannon, 82, of Charlotte, NC and formerly of Crystal passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2020 in NC.
Bonnie was born on August 29, 1937 in Vivian, West Virginia where she resided with her parents Jessie and Jennie Carter. She was the youngest of 8 children. Bonnie grew up in a Christian home and accepted Christ at a young age. She would later attend Trinity Baptist Church in Columbus, OH, Redeeming Life Christian Center in Bluefield, WV and The Park Church in Charlotte, NC when her health permitted. Bonnie graduated from Tazewell County Public School system in 1954.
After graduating, she moved to Columbus, OH to pursue a career in cosmetology. While in Columbus, she met and married Winston Ashley Leonard I. Their union resulted in the birth of three children, Truth, Winston II and Faith. They resided in Virginia until their separation in 1977. She moved back to Columbus, OH where she cared for her children and worked in the housekeeping department of Grant Hospital until she met Clarence Buckhannon Sr. They married in 1988 and she moved back to her home state of West Virginia. She resided in West Virginia until 2014 when she moved to Charlotte, NC due to problems with her vision. She resided in Charlotte with her youngest daughter and granddaughter until her death.
She will be remembered by her children for being a strong, loving, caring, God fearing woman. Her upbringing and continued relationship with Christ allowed her to persevere throughout the many trials and tribulations that she may have faced in life. She was all about her family and would do anything to make sure they stayed together.
She is preceded in death by her parents Jessie and Jennie Carter, her husband Clarence Buckhannon Sr, her siblings Monroe, Jessie Jr, Harry, Roosevelt, Ola, and Lena.
She leaves to cherish in her memory, one son Winston Ashley Leonard II of Bluefield, WV, two daughters, Truth Leonard of Jonesboro, GA and Faith Leonard of Charlotte, NC, one brother, Bobby Carter of Columbus, OH, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one god-granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, March 16, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Bluefield.
Friends may call on Monday prior to the services, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home.
