Bernard Lee Phipps, Sr., 89, of Ramey Street, Bramwell, WV, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017 at his home. Born on September 8, 1928 in Boissevain, he was a son of the late Kester and Martha Hill Phipps. He had been a resident of Bramwell for 56 years and was a retired coal miner with 33 years of service at Eastern Associated Coal Company in Keystone. He was a US Army Veteran and served in Korea where he received two bronze stars. He was a member of Bramwell Wesleyan Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bernard Phipps, Jr; brothers, Bill, Sherman and Hamilton Phipps; and sisters, Hallie Bailey, Maggie Tabor, Ruth Griffey, Shirley Kester and Joy Martin. Survivors include: Wife:     Pearl Dillon Phipps of the home 2 sons:  Terry Phipps of Westerville, OH                 Clifton Phipps of NC   Daughters:          Joan Phipps Alford and Matthew of Lynchburg, VA                                 Deborah Carl and husband Frank of Westerville, OH                                 Darlene Lane and husband Kester of Bramwell                                 Tammy Slusher and husband Les of Abbs Valley, VA   25 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren   Sister:   Freda Kirk of NC   Daughter in Law:              Brenda Phipps of Pocahontas, VA   Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Joey Ryan officiating,  and Matthew Alford. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. The Mercer County Veteran’s Honor Guard will perform military honors.   Friends may call on Friday from 10:00-11:00 at the funeral home.   Memorial contributions may be made to the Bramwell Wesleyan Church.   Online condolences will be accepted at www.cravens-shires.com. Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell is serving the family.
