James Dewey Shrader

March 11, 1936 — April 3, 2017

James Dewey Shrader, 81, of Abbs Valley, VA, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Tazewell Community Hospital.   Born on March 11, 1936 in Stoney Ridge in Tazewell County, VA. For many years he was self-employed by Shrader Used Auto Parts since 1954. He loved playing his guitar and banjo. He wrote over 100 songs and had a love of music and bluegrass through most of his life. He was a 1954 graduate of Pocahontas High School and a veteran of the US Army.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Leftridge and Eliza Jane Hamblin Shrader; sisters, Nannie Bell Aliff, Irene Shrader and Ethel Nunley; and a brother, Herman Shrader.   Survivors include:   Wife:     Shirley McCroskey Shrader of the home   Daughter:            Lori Yuvonne Shrader of Bluefield   3 step-children:                Debbie Collins and husband Larry of Abbs Valley, VA                                 Sue Horn of Rosenbaum, VA                                 Randy Dickens and wife Juanita of Franklinton, NC   5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren   Sisters: Eva Asbury, Hazel Collins, Mary Lee Taylor   Many nieces and nephews   Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 12:00 Noon at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Paul Baker, Reginald Blakewood, and Johnny Nunley officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA. Larry Collins, Garrett Collins, Jason Howell, Robbie Collins, Caleb Dickens, Herbert Asbury will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside honors will be performed.   Friends may call on Thursday from 11:00-12:00 at the funeral home.   Online condolences will be accepted at www.cravens-shires.com
