Gladys Lavone Powell

Gladys Lavone (Cox) Powell, 88, of Bluewell, gained her angel wings on January 25, 2017.   Born on August 1, 1928 in Bluefield, she was a daughter of late Andrew and Lorena Niece Cox.   Gladys was married to the late Dr. Rev. Kenneth R. Powell on June 25, 1947 and traveled the United States and Europe while Kenneth served his country. After Kenneth retired, they traveled the United States during the summer and spent their winters in Haines City, FL until Kenneth’s passing in 2009. Gladys had been a resident of Bluewell since 1984 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bluewell.   In addition to her parents, Gladys is preceded in death by her husband; Dr. Kenneth R. Powell; three sons, Kenneth Roland, Jr., William Edward, and Donald Keith; one daughter, Gloria (Powell) Stroub; two brothers, June and Marion Cox; and two sisters, Stella (Cox) Hughes and Shirley (Cox) Barrett.   Survivors include her son, Ronald and wife Connie of the home; 8 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.   Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Emory Marchant officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where Stephen Lively, Shawn Frawley, Jacob Powell, Stephen Stroub, Brian Gilmore and David Powell will serve as pallbearers. Blake Gremore and Trey New will serve as honorary pallbearers.   Friends may call on Sunday evening from 6-8PM at the funeral home.   Online condolences will be accepted at www.cravens-shires.com
