Adam Gray Smith

Adam Gray “AG” Smith, 84, of Summerfield Road, Princeton, WV, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Mercer Nursing and Rehab in Bluefield.   Although known for the courageous fighter he was, after a tiring battle with Alzheimer's at the ripe old age of 84, he decided to wave the white flag and surrender. His battle here on earth was over and it was time for him to go to his heavenly home located in heaven where he could be reunited with his loved ones that went on before him.   Adam resided at Summerfield Road in Glenwood with his niece Anita Gail Hall-Bryant who took care of him with his brother Thomas Melvin Smith Sr. and her family until his battle with Alzheimer's become full force and which at that point, he went for rehabilitation at the Mercer Nursing and Rehab Center where he gave the nurses something to talk about. They said he was like a cat with more than nine lives. AG was loved by all that had the chance to meet him.    Adam Gray Smith was born in Crystal, West Virginia, to the Late Loman and Della Odonell Smith. He was also proceeded in death by two sisters, Alice Henderson and Francis Gibson; three brothers, Albert Cecil Smith, Sydney Smith and Daniel and Smith.   He is survived by three brothers, Thomas Melvin Smith Sr., of Glenwood, Roosevelt and Mary Smith of Oak Island, North Carolina, and David and Geneva Smith of Palmdale, California, and two sister-in-laws.    He is also survived by special nieces, great nieces, great-great nieces, and nephews. The family is so big and scattered, there are too many to list by name. He is also survived by so many special friends, especially the ones on the old road as he called it,  his card and drinking buddies.    He served in the US Army for six years and as a private first class for the heavy mortar company 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division and Korea. He was awarded several medals that he was truly proud of.    He was a jack of all trades and worked all of his life in so many different fields, from delivering groceries, playing guitar at church, construction, and when he retired he spent those last year's working for the Bluefield news agency.   He did reside on the Old Bluefield–Princeton Road for many years with his special friend, Bee Long. I am sure he is rejoicing in heaven with her.    Celebration of his life will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017, at 2:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell. The family will conduct services and they request to dress casual for the services. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors.   Friends may call one hour prior to services, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the funeral home.   Online condolences will be accepted at www.cravens-shires.com
