Mona Elizabeth Owrey Taylor, age 65, of Glenwood Park Road, Princeton, WV expired at Princeton Community Hospital on October 20, 2016, after an extended illness. Born April 2, 1951 in Elkhorn, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Henry Owrey and Mona Elizabeth Moreton Owrey. Mona was a graduate of Northfork High School, Concord College and West Virginia University, where she earned a Master’s degree in Education. Her career and lifetime vocation as a kindergarten and early childhood teacher spanned 32 years at several elementary schools in McDowell County, having last taught at Kimball Elementary from where she retired in 2005. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Owrey; sister, Claire Owrey Mathena; brother-in-law, Mike Alley; and beloved husband, James (Jim) W. Taylor. She is survived by her mother, Mona Moreton Owrey; sister, Janet Alley; brother, James Owrey (Rosalie); and brother-in-law, Roy Mathena. She was also survived by dear friend and caregiver, Virginia Ashby Bell. Family was paramount to Mona and although she had no children of her own, she cherished, loved, nurtured, and took a very active part in the growth and development of her nieces and nephews. They include Roy Lee Mathena, Brian Mathena, Andrew Mathena and Melissa Mathena Taylor, all of Ohio; Jennifer Hurt, Meghan Alley and Elizabeth Alley, all of Mercer Co. WV; James C. Owrey of Charleston, WV, and Sara Owrey Monteleone of Leesburg, VA. She also took much delight in her great-nieces, Baylee Tanner, Hannah Poe, Makenna Hayes, Paige Mathena, and Juliette and Penelope Monteleone; her great-nephews, Jonothan and Konner Taylor, Alec Mathena, Duncan Mathena, and Bronson and Sawyer Mathena. Mona greatly enjoyed the ocean, and took pleasure in hosting and sharing that experience with any family members who could join her in the highly anticipated “beach week”. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Steve Rector officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with friends and family serving as pallbearers.
