Steve David Bailey died peacefully with his family by his side on his sixty-sixth wedding anniversary, September 2, 2016, at the age of 86. Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He never knew a stranger, and his family will have memories of him being a loving, caring person and a faithful provider.
Steve was born in Sandlick, West Virginia on May 17, 1930, and attended Bramwell High School. He served in the Navy from 1951-1955, during the Korean War. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1986 after over 38 hard-working years.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Lucille Smiley Bailey, his son, Michael Bailey and wife Missy, of Princeton, his daughter, Lori Branham and husband Mike, of Lebanon, Virginia, his grandsons, Steve Bailey and wife Melissa, of Roanoke, Virginia, David Aaron Bailey and wife Santana, of Moneta, Virginia, and Heath Branham and wife Elizabeth, of Lebanon, Virginia, his great-grandson, Jackson Steve, of Roanoke, his brother, Joe Barnett and wife Barbara, of Princeton, his sisters, Saundra Barnett, of Beckley, Shelby Shumate and husband Larry, of Princeton, Kathleen Krondon and husband Joseph, of Pasadena, Maryland, Juanita Bailey, of Princeton, Sandy Dunn and husband Bruce, of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, and Carol Rutledge and husband Craig, of Yadkinville, North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Nellie Smith Barnett and step-father, Glenn Barnett, of Sandlick, his father, Ernest Bailey, of Montcalm, and his brother, Roger Bailey, of Princeton.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Rev. Melody Rickman officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military honors will be performed by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Bailey, Aaron Bailey, Gary Winfrey, Zack Perkins, Wesley King and Tim Wyatt. Friends may call on Monday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
