Betty Daugherty

Betty Poe Daugherty, age 92, of Abbs Valley, VA, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born on April 4, 1924, in Bluewell, she was the daughter of Raymond M. and Bessie Trail Poe. She was the wife of the late James Howard Daugherty for 43 years until his death. She was a graduate of Beaver High School and then later attended West Virginia Business College. She worked for a lawyer and Thornton’s Department Store. She then joined the Navy and became a proud veteran. She was employed by Tazewell County Schools as a secretary at Pocahontas High School for 29 years. Betty was a member of Boissevain Baptist Church, the Bluefield #102 Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Post #14 and AARP. She was a very special and loving lady and will be missed by many and especially her church family. She especially enjoyed her excursions across the USA and going to the beach. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard Poe; a sister Jean Christerson; a step-mother, Nada Poe; and a son-in-love, Carson Hilton. Survivors include: Her devoted daughter: Veronica Daugherty of Abbs Valley Sister-in-Law: Helen Richardson of Roanoke, VA Nephews: John Daugherty of Pasadena, MD, James Daugherty of Bluefield, VA, William Daugherty of Celebration, FL, Michael Poe of Bluefield, WV and Charles Poe of Athens, WV Nieces: Kathy, Sherri and Kerri Poe of Bluefield, WV and Jeanne Stephens of Fort Meade, FL Special Friends: Linda Boone, Leroy and Brenda Bowman and Mike and Karen Hale Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 3:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Rev. Reginald Blakewood, Rev. Danny Shortridge and Rev. Robert Walker officiating the service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where graveside military honors will be performed by the American Legion Post#14. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Hale, Leroy Bowman, Jimmy Dickens, Eugene Hilton, Michael Hankins, Kenneth Dickens and Harold Chinsolo. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home where an Eastern Star service will be held at 7:30 PM with Bluefield #102 Chapter conducting the service. Friends may also call on Thursday from 2:00 til 3:00 PM prior the service.
