Mary Jane Whaling, age 88, of South Lane, Bluefield, VA died on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born on February 29, 1928, in Kyle, WV, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Sarah Buchannan Parks. She had lived in Bluefield, VA since 1995 and was a member of the Bluewell United Methodist Church. She was a retired nurse having worked for Dr. Lovern in Bluewell. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include: Her husband, of 70 years, Herman Whaling of the home. Her daughters, Sandra Elswick and husband Lee of Bluefield, VA and Donna McNeil and husband Tom of Advance, NC. Her brother, Tommy Parks and wife Faye of Martinsville, VA Her sister, Shirley Williams and husband Urschell of Bluefield, WV Grandchildren include Bryan McNeil and wife Miliette of Washington, DC, Chris Elswick and wife Beth of Peterstown, WV, Brad McNeil and wife Yvonne of Winston-Salem, NC, Sarah Elswick of Bluefield, VA, Todd Elswick of Maryland and Alison Spears and husband Austin of St. Mary’s, GA. She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Rev. Stephen Rector and Rev. D. Homer Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where her grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.
