Evelyn "Doopie" Arnetta Hopkins

Evelyn Arnetta “Doopie” Hopkins, 98, of Roanoke, Virginia formerly of Bluewell, West Virginia passed away on Sunday, May 01, 2016 at Raleigh Court Health & Rehabilitation Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Evelyn was born on October 14, 1917 at Fall River in McDowell County, West Virginia to the late Vent Elbert Hopkins and Jessie Grant Hopkins. She was a graduate of Welch High School in 1935 and was privileged to attend Berea College, graduating in 1939. She taught at Davy Elementary School until her retirement in 1974. She was active in the Rebekah Lodge and also the Thera Rho Girls. She also worked with the Marytown Community Church for many years. While teaching at Davy Elementary she was chosen by the Davy Women’s Club for Teacher of the year in 1960 and was “runner up” for the honor. Upon retirement she moved with her family to Bluewell. During the retirement years she enjoyed quilting and other crafts, reading and taking part in the activates of the club. She was a member of Mapleview Church of Christ and taught Sunday school classes as needed. She was also a member of the Bluewell Home Demonstration until it was disbanded, serving as secretary for many years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers Elmer Hopkins and Kermit Hopkins and one sister Blanche Akers. She is survived by two sisters: Ruth Hopkins of Roanoke, Virginia and Louise Warden and husband T.A. Warden, Jr. of Christiansburg, Virginia; as well as several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 04, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, West Virginia with Minister Tony Reed officiating the service. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the Mausoleum by 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow with friends and family serving as pallbearers.
