Jewel Brooks Short

Jewel Brooks Short, 91, of Oakhurst Avenue, Bluefield, WV, passed away on Monday, February 8, 2016 at his home. Born on June 7, 1924 in Crystal, he was a son of the late George and Mary Gregory Short. He had been a resident of Bluefield since 1970 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bluefield where he was a member of the Senior Friends and the Oasis group of First Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the World War II serving in Korea and Vietnam and was retired M/Sgt. from the US Air Force with 26 ½ years of service. He was a member of the Titan and Atlas Missile Crew. He was a member of the VFW and America Legion. Jewel was an avid fan of the Bluefield Baseball Club. Mr. Short was also a member of the Masonic Lodge AF&AM. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Numa “Teenie” Short; brothers, Douglas, Charles “Bud”, Curtis, Carl, and Harry Short; and a sister, Evelyn Austin. Survivors include: Sister in law: Deanie Short of Woodbridge, VA Dear Friends: Carol and Ron Townley of Bluefield Several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 11:00 at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Raymond Klaibler officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where Ron Townley, Chuck Lambert, Nelson Short, Charles Short, Roger Belcher, and Delbert Gills will serve as pallbearers. Military honors will be performed by the US Air Force Honor Guard. Friends may call on Thursday from 10:00-11:00 at the funeral home.
