Joseph Hamer

Jacksonville Florida - Joseph Hamer, 99 of Jacksonville Florida, formerly of Sandlick, Bluefield WV and Burk Mountain, Keystone WV, passed away May 11, 2015. He was born December 6, 1915 in Lancashire County, Kearsley England. He was born to the late James Hamer and Nellie Stockton Hamer. Joe and his family migrated from England to America when he was 6 years old. Joe was the last remaining survivor of his immediate family. He retired from Eastern Associated Coal Corporation of Keystone WV with 40 years of service. After retirement Joe and his first wife Louise spent their winters in Florida until her death in 1999. Joe was a lifelong member of Burke Baptist in Keystone, WV, and a devoted member of Mandarin Baptist in Jacksonville, Florida. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Kimball, WV. Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, son-in-laws and grandsons. He was an avid gardener, who enjoyed raising vegetables and prize geraniums. He enjoyed vacations and cruises with his wife Zeta and his step-son Lewis, wife Rita, stepdaughter Melanie and their extended family. Joe enjoyed Life! He was a devoted Christian and was Thankful to God for each day given to him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Gilmore Hamer of 64 years, daughter Ann Jane Milam Hamer, son Danny Hamer and 3 sisters Dorothy Brown, Ann Jane (Jennie) East Cyphers and Nellie Harsanyi Smith. Joe is survived by his loving wife Zeta Patterson Hamer of 13 years. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his surviving children and their families. Surviving children of Joe's deceased daughter of Ann Jane Milam Hamer. (Grandchildren) Lisa Lester and husband Robert. Melissa Bailey and husband Michael. Debra Taylor. ( Great-grandchildren) Michael Treolo and wife Jessica, Justin Lester, Steve Bailey and wife Melissa, Aaron Bailey and Santanna, Brandon Athey and Christina, Anthony Athey and Candice, Alexis Taylor. (Great-great grandchildren) Ava and Autumn Treolo, Jackson Bailey, Kyndal, Kayden, Kameron and Isaac Athey. Surviving children of Joe's deceased son Danny Hamer, (Grandson) Joey Hamer and wife Francine. (Step Great-granddaughter) Gretchen; (step grandchildren) Mike and Lynn Burnopp; Jessica Burress; (step great grandchildren), Andrew Burnopp, Evan Burnopp, Roy Burress, Jr., Adam and Kyle Burress. Joe was blessed with a host of nieces and nephews and extended family in England. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 10:00am at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell WV with Pastor Darrell Church officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with Grandsons and Great-Grandson serving as pallbearers. Visitation with the family will be Friday, May 15, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
