Lena Ferrante Mariotti, 98, formerly of Bluewell and most recently a resident of Glenwood Park Retirement Village died Wednesday, October 29th at her assisted living residence.
Born October 26, 1916, at McComas, WV, she was the daughter of the late Vito and Porzia Ferrante of Modugno, Italy. She attended schools in Italy learning embroidery and crewel work, taught kindergarten there and then returned to West Virginia in 1938.
She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bluefield and St. Anne’s Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Mariotti, Sr., one daughter, Natalina Jean, and brothers Andrew, Nick and Frank Ferrante and one sister, Mary Ferrante.
Survivors include daughters, Porcilla Saunders and husband, Charles, of Richmond, Va., Loretta Hammond and husband, Don, of Bluefield, Va. and Anna Marie Allen and husband, Seymour, of Charlottesville, Va; son, Carl Mariotti, Jr. and wife, Linda, of Bluefield. She was Nonna to Grandchildren Lisa Passarella and husband, Mark, of Charlottesville, Va., Scott Saunders and wife, Manya, of Richmond, Va., Clay Hurst of New York, Mark Mariotti and wife, Kara, of Radford, Va., Carla English and husband, Bobby of Bluefield, Amy Hammond of Radford, VA, Laura Hubble and husband, Eric, of Christiansburg, VA, Jennifer and Caroline Allen of Charlottesville, Va. She was Great Nonna to Bradley, Elizabeth and Cameron Passarella, Charles, Alex and Hunter Saunders, Camden Mariotti, Dawson and Ellie Perry, Hailey and Jackson Hurst, Olivia, Sydney and Jacob English, Abbie Brown and Andrew Hubble. Also left to cherish her memory are Brother-in-law Americo Mariotti, Sister-in-law Elettra Mariotti, many nieces and nephews,
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 31, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield with Father Elpidio Geneta officiating. Visitation will be held in the church one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry (PO Box 608 Bluefield, WV 24701) or to one’s favorite charity.
