Bernice M. Long

On August 7, 2014 our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister aunt and friend was raised on angel wings to her heavenly home. Bernice M. Long, 86, of Princeton, WV was born to Jay Morgan and Amanda Lockhart Morgan Thornton on March 14, 1928 in Wyoming County. Bernice lived in Iaeger and Welch before moving to Mercer County 33 years ago. Bernice had countless friends during her life. She loved to travel, ready to go at the drop of a hat. She was an excellent cook, famous for her pound and Coca-Cola cakes. She certainly possessed a green thumb and loved her flowers and garden. She was an expert with floral arranging. She was also a great quilter, making quilts for her family. She loved her family and held them close to her heart. She had a very special place in her heart for her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her much joy and pleasure. Bernice worked all of her life having worked for J.C. Penney’s and having retired from the Kroger Company. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a life-long Baptist and was baptized July 20, 1975 at Calvary Baptist Church in Iaeger. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay Morgan and Amanda Lockhart Morgan Thornton; sister, Joy Morgan; most loved brother, Jay C. Morgan; brother-in-law, Jack Trail; niece, Crystal Justice Redding as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Those surviving to honor her memory are her son, Chester H. Long, Jr. and wife Charlene; daughter, Mary Lou Baker and husband Jim all of Bluefield. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sherri and Brian Foy, Kevin and Leslie Long, James R. “Richie” and Jenenna Baker and Kim and Steve Barnes; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Brooke Foy, Alexa Long, Jordan and Meya Baker and Charles and Asher Barnes; sisters, Josephine Trail, Helena Morgan, Ernestine Thornton and Peggy Justice; brothers, Frank and Kathy Morgan and Raymond and Candace Thornton; nieces, Jackie and Ron Kinder, Lisa and Jim Creel and their children, Randy and Andrew Kinder and Kaillyn Cline; nephews, Lynn and Coressa Morgan and Jay and Wendy Justice and their children, Amanda, Phillip, Anthony Morgan, Whitney Justice and Courtney Riffe as well as a host of cousins. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Elder Thurman Belcher and Rev. Kevin Belcher officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Serving as her pallbearers will be Trevor Foy, Brian Foy, Jim Creel, Kevin Long, Rich Baker and John Baker. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Kinder, Randy Kinder, Ron Kinder, Jr., Jordan Baker, Charles Barnes and Asher Barnes.
