James Wallace Riggs

James Wallace Riggs Sr, 77, formerly of Corun Rd, Jefferson, MD, and Bella Drive, Princeton, WV, and most recently of Berkeley Springs Rehab and Nursing, Berkeley Springs, WV, died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Thursday March 20. Born on May 8, 1936 in Sandlick, WV, he was the son of the late Clyde Andrew and Dulcie Lucille Riggs of Princeton.   He retired on July 31, 1974 as a veteran of 20 years as a Staff Sergeant from the United States Air Force having served in Vietnam.  He was also retired from the Board of Education of Frederick County in MD, and more recently had worked for the National Cancer Institute at Ft. Detrick in Frederick, MD.  While living in Jefferson, MD, he was a member of the Jefferson Ruritan Club, assisting with the annual fund raising carnival.  He was a member of Catoctin Episcopal Parish - Harriet Chapel serving in many worship capacities.  He was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Columbia Lodge #58 Frederick, MD. He was preceded in death by his former wife Floatella Carbaugh Riggs in February of 2008.  Mr Riggs was preceded in death by his brothers, Andrew Riggs, Ward Riggs, Harry Riggs, and Johnny Ray Riggs, and sisters Doreen Riggs Miles, Trina Riggs Goodman, Dolores Riggs Beavers, and Claudia Riggs Moore. Survivors include his bother Larry Riggs of Princeton along with his wife Sarah Riggs, daughter Lynne Riggs Gartrell of Smithsburg, MD, son James Wallace Riggs Jr  and his wife Lisa Blank Riggs of Frederick, MD, grandchildren Jamie Gartrell, David Gartrell, James Wallace Riggs III, Catlin Riggs, Laceyann Riggs, and Thomas Riggs, and great-grandchildren Aubry Ragland and Alexis Ragland, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Bill Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Princeton. Friends may call on Sunday from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
