Robert C. Farley, Sr. 89 was called to his eternal home on Friday, December 13, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at his home on Paradise Lane in Pocahontas, Va. He had courageously fought cancer for the last four years. He was the son of the late James H. Farley and Claudia Collins Farley. Robert was born in Boissevain, Virginia on January 16, 1924. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Agee Farley, siblings, Mary, Alonzo, Paul, Silas, Gertrude, Mae, Early, Russell and James. He is survived by his brothers, Howard and wife Linda Farley of Athens, West Virginia, Nathaniel Farley of Clearwater, Florida. His surviving sisters include Lorraine and husband Ed Lewis of Detroit, Michigan, Adeline Bishop of Bluefield, West Virginia, Audean and husband Bill Crawford of Yards, Virginia. Other living survivors include Sister in Law Dorothy Farley of Alabama and brother and sister in law Robert and wife Shirley Agee of Wolfe, West Virginia. His surviving children are Dolores and husband Ron Hutcherson of Dacula, Georgia, Janet and husband Elden Harrison of Joppa, Maryland, Pam and husband Bill Cannoy of Pocahontas, Virginia, Robert Farley Jr. and wife Patricia of Charlottesville, Virginia, John and wife Cathy Farley of Princeton, West Virginia and David Farley of Camp Creek, West Virginia. He is survived by 15 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Mr. Farley lived in Pocahontas nearly 70 years. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America district 17 for 72 years and Pocahontas Masonic Lodge 240. He was a member of the Pocahontas Baptist Church and a retired coal miner with 35 years’ service having worked in Boissevain, Jenkinjones and Itmann. As a young boy, he was compelled to quit school to assist the family through the depression. He was part of Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corp. Upon leaving the Corp, he immediately went to work in the mines that provided coal for the war effort. He was a lifelong Baseball fan and enjoyed watching his Braves and teaching his children the finer points of the game. “Hoss” Farley will surely be missed by his many friends and his loving family. Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Pocahontas Baptist Church in Pocahontas, Virginia with Rev. William L. Davis and Dr. Darrell L. Hunley officiating the service. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia where The Pocahontas Masonic Lodge #240 will conduct Masonic Graveside rites. Serving as pallbearers will be Adam Cannoy, Aaron Farley, Jeremy Marshall, Randy Boone, Chris Harmon and James Farley. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, West Virginia and one hour prior to the service on Monday at Pocahontas Baptist Church.
