Claude Louis Miller, age 87, of Duck Pond Road (Bluewell), Bluefield, WV, passed away on July 21, 2013 at his residence. Born on November 13, 1925 in Freeman, he was a son of the late Homer and Helen Cox Miller. He had been a resident for Bluewell for 46 years and was of the Christian faith. He was a US Navy Veteran serving in World War II in 17 invasions. He served on the USS Paul Hamilton and was in the Merchant Marines. He received 6 stars in the Asiatic-Pacific area, 2 stars in the Philippine Liberation, a good conduct medal, and a WW II victory medal. He was a member of the VFW Post 3112. He was retired from N&W Railroad with 38 years and was a motorcar operator. He was a member of the local United Transportation Union #0655. He was a hard worker and enjoyed working with antiques. Survivors include: Wife of 48 years: Joyce Hearl Miller of the home Daughter: Barbara Scott and Rick of Salem, VA 3 grandchildren: Stephen Scott of Charlottesville, VA Missy Smith of Roanoke, VA Tammy Jones of Roanoke, VA 7 great grandchildren 1 sister: Peggy Perkins and Clarence “Perk” of Cincinnati, OH 2 sisters in law: Barbara Hearl of Princeton Peggy Hearl of Twin Branch, WV Special niece: Nancy Johnson and daughter Tausha of Independence, KY Special nephews: Kenneth Perkins, Phillip Perkins and Dan Perkins of Cincinnati, OH Albert Falvo , III of Hagerstown, MD Special Caregivers: Hershal Hearl, Becky Basham, and Phyllis Greathead Numerous cousins A very special family friend, Billy Autement of New Orleans, LA Favorite pet: “Ginger” Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with Rev. Jimmie Russ officiating. Burial will follow with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Military honors will be performed by the US Navy Honor Guard and the Mercer County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell on Wednesday at 10:45 AM.
