Margaret Janet Shumate

December 13, 1925 — July 13, 2013

Margaret Janet Veronica Smith Shumate “Our Angel” of Bluefield, WV formerly of Crumpler, WV left this world to be re-united with the “Love of her life” the late Estel M. Shumate on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 4:37 p.m. at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, WV. Margaret, “Peggy” was born on December 13, 1925 in Newport, RI to the late Earnest C. Smith and Katherine B. Murphy Smith. She will be remembered as a loving, caring and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and best friend. Margaret was a very strong, brave and courageous lady. She always told family and friends “Keep your chin up” because the word “quit” was “not” in her vocabulary. Margaret was very proud of her Irish heritage and strong in her Catholic Faith which she instilled in her children and family. Margaret “A Pearl” lived her life with love and happiness, always had a smile for others even though she felt pain and suffering every day. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Estel M. Shumate, three sisters Betty Geer, Claire Crockett and Mary Berube. One son in law David L. Smith and daughter in law Connie K. Shumate She is survived by son Richard D. Shumate of Midway, WV, daughter Barbara S. Polatz of Bluefield, WV, Sandra S. Lares and companion Michael Smalls of Shelby, NC, Patricia G. Smith of Green Valley, WV and Deborah J. Shumate with whom she made her home, Son Michael E. Shumate and wife/fifth daughter Madonna of Bluefield, WV. Ten grandchildren Brian Shumate and wife Jill, Wendy Lawless and husband Chris, Chris Smith and wife Dawn, Eric Polatz and wife Lora, Kate Jennings and husband Joey, Jennifer P. Smith, Becca Blankenship and estranged husband Chad, Deborah Crandall and husband Eric, Margaret “Peggy Sue” Shumate and PVT. Estel M. Shumate of the U.S. Army. She was known as “Nannie” to her grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren Anthony, Candace, Angel, Eric, T.J., Bo, Jesse, Cliff, Dixie, Jacob, Michaelyn, Duece, Julia, Blake, Christina, Avery, Chandler, D.J. Cory, Cassidee and Jackson. “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength; in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalms 18:2) Margaret, who will be deeply missed, even by her boxer puppy Bella would not want you to grieve for her but to celebrate her life and know that she is finally at home and at peace. A mass of Christian Burial will be held for Margaret on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield, WV at 1:00 p.m. with Father EL. officiating the service. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV where Brian, Chris, Eric, Chris, Anthony and T.J. will be serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Pvt. Estel M. Shumate, Jesse, Bo, and Jacob. Friends and family may call at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluefield (Bluewell), WV on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where a Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. in lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donation may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 Online condolences will be accepted at www.cravens-shires.com Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, 3431 Coal Heritage Road (Bluewell), Bluefield, WV 24701 is serving the family.
