Paul Winford Martin

PAUL WINFORD MARTIN, 91, a longtime resident of Bluewell and, most recently, a resident at the Glenwood Park Retirement Village, passed away on Sunday evening, June 9 at Glenwood Park. He was born on November 28, 1921, in Callaway, Virginia. He was the son of Morgin H. Martin and Effie Sigmon Martin of Montcalm – both of whom preceded him in death. He also had 2 brothers, Andy Martin and Otis Martin, and one sister, Irene Martin Wood, all of whom preceded him in death. Paul was a graduate of McComas High School, and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He married Margaret Theda (“Johnnie”) Johnson of Bluefield, Virginia, in 1944, and they remained married for 57 years until her death in 2001. He was a longtime employee with Consolidated Coal Company and was Supervisor of Consol’s Coal Laboratory in Pocahontas, Virginia, until his retirement. He was a member of Bluewell United Methodist Church. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Goforth, and her husband, Buck, of Roanoke, Virginia, and his son, Paul E. Martin, and his wife, Jill, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and a daughter-in-law, Lois Martin, of Centreville, Virginia. Also surviving, are 3 grandchildren, Kristy Goforth Muddiman and her husband, Paul, of Lexington, South Carolina; Jamie Goforth and his wife, Liz, of Denver, Colorado; and Patrick Martin of Arlington, Virginia. He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hunter, and Grant Muddiman of Lexington, SC. Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 11:00AM at the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with Rev. Steve Rector officiating. Burial will follow with the US Navy Honor Guard performing military honors. Friends may call on Wednesday from 10:00-11:00 AM at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell.
