John Richard Phillips, age 83, of Blue Prince Road (Green Valley), Bluefield, WV, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at his home.
Born on September 5, 1929 in Arizona, he was a son of the late Lunnie and Arlie Poff Phillips. He had been a resident of Green Valley for 40 years and was a member of the Grace Baptist Church on Grassy Branch Road in Bluefield. He was a former coal miner and had retired from the Bluestone Coal Co. with 39 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA. He was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict.

Wife of 58 years: Flora Hazelwood Phillips of the home
2 sons: Steve Phillips and wife Carrie of Montcalm
Darrell Phillips of Roanoke, VA
3 grandchildren: Travis Phillips, Jonathan Phillips, and Seth Phillips
1 great granddaughter: Jessica Phillips
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. George Stamper officiating. Burial will follow at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd, VA where full military honors will be conducted by the VFW Post #7854 and the American Legion Post #27. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
