Vernon “Pete” Reed, age 93, of Route 3 Box 482 (Lorton Lick Road), Bluefield, WV, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at the Mercer Nursing and Rehab Center in Bluefield. Born on August 27, 1918 in Oakvale, he was a son of the late James and Bertie Ratcliff Reed. He had been a lifelong resident of Mercer County and was a retired diesel mechanic and heavy equipment operator with Poca Fuel. He was an avid coon and rabbit hunter and had won several first place awards with his horse “Miss Louise”. He was a member of the Bluewell United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents in death by his wife, Effie Mae Wilson Reed; 9 sisters, Zela Peak, Elizabeth Peak, Thelma Roland, Marie Dibert, Mabel, Olive, Burnice Wimmer, Hazel Keatley, and Ethel; and 2 brothers, Paul Reed and Therman Reed. Survivors include: 1 Son: Wayne Reed and wife Rhonda of Bluefield 1 Daughter: Emma Jo East and Curtis of Lenoir, NC 1 Granddaughter: Shannon Poore 2 Grandsons: Scott East and Ricky East 1 Great Grandson: Zachary East 2 step great grandsons: Jordie and Justin Cannon Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Minister Tony Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where Clinton Christian, Lee Poff, Delbert Gills, Albert Stanger, Ricky Crawford and Ricky East will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call on Friday from 6-8 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell.
