Charles Magyar

Bland, VA – Charles Magyar, 89, of Bland, VA formerly of Anawalt, WV, passed away Saturday July 16, 2011 in a Bluefield hospital. Born November 13, 1921 in Dorchester, VA, he was a son of the late Frank and Julia Sipos Magyar who migrated to this country from Hungary. Mr. Magyar proudly served his country during World War II in the15th U.S. Army Air Force as a Staff Sgt. Where he was a tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator. S. Sgt. Magyar passed the fifty mission mark with distinction; including missions over Germany, Northern Italy, France, Austria and the Balkins. His most challenging and difficult mission being over Brataslavia, Czechoslovakia ,where numerous enemies were encountered. S.Sgt. Magyar earned the Air Medal with three clusters, Good Conduct Medal, the African-European-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, and his unit received two Presidential Unit Citations; one for a low-level attack on Ploesti, Rumania, and the other for outstanding service and sustained performance in desert warfare. Mr. Magyar also worked forty-one years for U.S.Steel in Gary, WV where he retired, was a member of the U.M.W.A., a member of the Heritage Baptist Church in Bland, VA , and a former member of the Long Point Baptist Church of Anawalt, WV. In addition to his parents Charles was preceded in death by two sisters; Katherine Koczan, Jennie Magyar, and two brothers; Frank Magyar, Jr., and Steve Magyar. He was the last surviving member of his family. Survivors include; his wife of 64 years, Elsie Mae Davis Magyar of the home, a son; Bill Magyar and wife Vickie of Bland, VA, a special granddaughter; Samantha “Sam” Magyar also of Bland, many loving nieces and nephews, including; Abbey and Josh Shrader, sister-in-law and brother-in-law; Dot and Paul Hutchison, brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Jack and Margie Davis, and sister-in-law; Carroll Davis and brother in law, the late Jim Davis. Funeral services for Charles Magyar will be conducted Tuesday July 19, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Travis Price and Donnie Farmer officiating. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery located in Bluewell. Serving the family as Pallbearers will be; Paul Hutchison, Mike Davis, Deark Waddle, Tom Davis, Jim Davis, and Rod Shrader. Friends may call at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Monday July 18, 2011 from 6:00P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
