Garnett W. Hale

Garnett W. “G. W.” Hale, Jr., age 83, of Route 5 Box 424-B, Bluefield, WV, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at a Bluefield hospital. Born on January 18, 1926 in Elkhorn, he was a son of the late Garnett W. hale, Sr. and Lila Hounchell Hale. He had been a resident of Bluewell for 60 years and was a member of the Bluewell United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 where he was in two combat invasions in the Philippines and Okinawa Island. He was a member of the Bramwell Masonic Lodge #45. Mr. hale worked for Eastern Fuel Company Store from 1946-1953. He later worked for Norfolk & Western Railroad from 1953 to 1986 and retired as a track supervisor in June of 1986. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Ortberg. Survivors include: Wife: Vera “Faye” Shaffer Hale of the home 1 son: Jimmy Hale and wife Rose of Collinsville, VA 2 grandchildren: Bradley Hale and wife Amanda of Collinsville, VA Derick Hale of Collinsville, VA 2 great grandchildren: Abigail and Taylor Hale 1 sister: Hazel Compton and husband Kyle of Galax, VA Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 1:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Stephen Rector and Rev. D. Homer Stewart officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview memory gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA where the Bramwell Masonic Lodge #45 will serve as pallbearers and conduct a graveside service. Friends may call on Monday from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
