Herbert L. Harrell

March 30, 1939 — April 12, 2010

Herbert L. Harrell, Jr. (H.L.) departed this Earth to life eternal on March 12, 2010 to be with his Heavenly Father in his eternal dwelling place prepared for him by the sacrificial death of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. H. L. was 71 years of age at his passing. H.L. leaves behind his devoted wife of 43 years, Jane McCormick Harrell and his beloved son, Kevin Anthony Harrell both of the home. H.L. was born in Pearisburg, VA to the late Herbert L. Harrell, Sr. and Nancy Thompson Harrell. He is also preceded in death by several aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of the family. Besides Jane and Kevin, H. L. leaves behind two immediate family members, a sister, Jane (Bobby) Williamson and a brother, Dr. Richard (Terry) Harrell, Sr., a minister who will preside over his service. There are numerous other beloved family members and friends who grieve over his departure. H. L. was an educated person who took his studies very seriously. He enjoyed sports (especially football) and was very active in several clubs during his high school days. H. L. was the first in his entire family to attend and graduate from college. He graduated from VPI (Virginia Tech) in 1961. After graduation, he entered the United States Air Force earning the rank of Captain. He served his country for five years, two of which were tours of duty in Viet Nam. After leaving the Air Force, he entered into his dream career of commercial flying with Delta Airlines with many years of service to them. He was both a mentor and friend to his brother, Richard Harrell, when it came to academics. H. L. even offered to pay for a home for his brother when he surrendered to the call to ministry and entered seminary. Love knows no bounds. H. L. made his public profession of faith in Jesus Christ as a teenager at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, VA. He confirmed that profession of faith again to relative of Jane’s who visited their home in December of last year. Celebration services will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 1: 00 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell with Dr. Richard (Terry) Harrell, Sr. officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 12:00 Noon til 1:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Special Olympics, Wanda Bell at 2019 Louetta Brook Court, Spring, TX 77388. Checks must made to SOTX-Spring Panthers. H.L.’s family celebrates his life and knows that he now resides in eternity with Jesus Christ with whom he entrusted his eternal destiny. Praise the LORD!
