Alex "Herb" McCroskey, age 78, of Jenkinjones WV passed away on Saturday August 28, 2010 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center following his battle with cancer.
He was born May 26, 1932 in Jenkinjones. He was a lifelong resident of Jenkinjones in McDowell County WV. He was the son of the late Brady & Gladys Presley McCroskey. He was a coal miner of 40 years with Consolidated Coal Company before retiring in 1989. He was a member of the UMWA and the local #7635 Union. His hobbies included hunting, tending to his garden, and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his youngest son Michael "Tony" McCroskey who passed in 2000, infant sister Ruby McCroskey, and brother Bill McCroskey.
Herb leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Betty Childress McCroskey. He also left behind two sons Alex Jr. & wife Barbara of Harpers Ferry, Richard & fiancé Sara of Jenkinjones and two daughters Kathy Sandifer & husband Kenton of Bluefield, VA and Aleta Nance of Jenkinjones. He leaves his siblings as follows: Brother, Paul & wife Mary McCroskey of Flat Rock, MI; Brother Luther McCroskey of Hudson, NC; Brother Bobby & wife Jean McCroskey of Archdale, NC; Brother Harvey & wife Ruby of Rocky Gap, VA; Sister Juanita & husband Bob DeTarville of Tacoma, WA; Sister-In-Law Marie McCroskey of Jenkinjones.
Pawpaw Herb is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his longtime friend Danny Bridgeman. Herb also left behind his cherished pets: Buster the cockatiel, Prissy & Dinky the cats.
Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 3:30 PM at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell with Rev. Dallas Peyton officiating. Burial will follow with Christopher Nance, Bo Davis, Ed McCroskey, Butch McCroskey, Joey McCroskey, and E.J. McCroskey serving as pallbearers.
