Donald Rockford Pollard

BLUEFIELD — Donald Rockford Pollard was born March 7, 1938 in Elkhorn, W.Va. and passed away on September 6, 2009 at his house with family by his side. He was the son of the late Willard G. and Faye E. Pollard. Don attended school in Berwind, W.Va. and joined the United States Navy in 1955-1964 Patrol Squadron # 42 at San Diego, Calif. He attended Berwind Junior High School before entering the Navy in May, 1955. Don was a friends person who met no stranger and loved to work with wood. He was the owner and operator of Pollard and Sons Maintenance of Bluefield. He was a graduate of the United Christian Church and Ministerial Association Bible Institute. He was a member of the Calvary Messenger Ministries of Bluefield, W.Va. Don was employed at the Miller Matz Hotel in Bluefield, W.Va. and retired in Maryland. He loved to travel and was an enthusiastic fisherman. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Don was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Martin Pollard; sisters, Juanita Davidson, Patricia Campbell; nieces, Michelle Pollard and Melinda Cameran; nephews, Norman Pollard, Jr., Marcus Pollard, and Thomas J. Cameron. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Augustine C. Woods Pollard; daughter, Cindy Ann “Charles” Carl of Charleston, W.Va.; son, Donald Dewayne “Heather” Pollard of Bluefield, W.Va.; three grandsons; two granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; three brothers; and two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with the Rev. Courtney Wallace, Elder Marquetta Cox, and the Rev. Donnie Farmer officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. where military honors will be performed by the WV Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veteran’s Council. Friends may call on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
